From Alo to Everlane, here are the clothing brands we turn to most for traveling.

The Best Travel Clothing Brands, Tested and Reviewed

As a frequent flier, I’ve learned from experience that comfort, durability, and versatility are essential when choosing the best travel clothing brands. When shopping, I’m always looking for companies that offer a wide variety of high-quality, classic styles that aren’t necessarily trendy but rather timeless and practical for building a capsule wardrobe.

With this in mind, the pieces should be comfortable, lightweight, breathable, and versatile enough to adapt to different travel scenarios. That way, no matter the occasion or destination, I can hit the ground running without stopping to change in my hotel room or, even worse, an airport restroom. With all this in mind, I combined my insight as a seasoned traveler with recommendations and vetted brands by Travel + Leisure editors to round up the best tried-and-true travel clothing brands to shop before your next trip.

  • Alo Yoga offers a range of fashion-forward athleisure staples crafted from diverse materials to suit different climates.

What to Consider

  • With many options over $100, it's not the most affordable athleisure brand.

With its wide variety of stylish yet functional athleisure pieces, it's no wonder that Alo Yoga has built a dedicated following among fitness enthusiasts and non-athletes alike.

Among our testers’ favorite Alo Yoga staples was the Foxy Sherpa Jacket, which was described as «plush and fluffy, but not too long or shaggy» and «so thick, warm, and cuddly.» Additional highlights include the zippered pockets for sufficient storage, the spacious and removable hood, and the high collar that can «snap with buttons at the neck, which is nice for warmth and not too constricting.» With all this in mind, it’s a must-have for cooler climates, as is the Airbrush Winter Warm High-waist Nocturne Legging, which stood out to our tester for its «very soft» fleece material, which «worked well at blocking wind and cold air.» We’d also be remiss not to mention the «flattering» compression and the thick, non-see-through material.

For warmer weather where fleece isn’t necessary, opt for the water-repellent Co-op Pant, which features a water-repellent construction, elastic waistband, and side-zip pockets. Style them with the brand’s best-selling Accolade Crew Neck Pullover, which comes in a slew of shades from black and white to spruce green and mushroom gray. The boxy, oversized silhouette is ideal for layering over a tank or wearing solo to the gym and beyond. We’ve also tested and loved the Incline Puffer Vest, Muse Hoodie, and Crinkle on the Move Trench.

$40 at Everlane Why We Love It

  • In addition to its wide range of apparel, Everlane is distinguished by its dedication to sustainability and transparency.

What to Consider

  • Those seeking bolder or more trend-oriented pieces may find the selection somewhat limited.

For classic wardrobe staples perfect for travel and beyond, look no further than Everlane, which offers high-quality, sustainable essentials made with recycled materials. The brand also stands out for its pricing transparency, and on each product page, you can see each garment's production costs.

While you truly can’t go wrong with any Everlane pieces, we’re partial to the aptly named Dream Pant. Our tester found them to be «extremely comfortable» and «incredibly soft, smooth, and breathable.» They’re also ideal for year-round wear, with our tester noting, «They’re thick enough for cooler months (or chilly airports) but light enough to pair with a crop top in the summer without feeling too warm.» The front pockets were described as «spacious without looking bulky,» easily fitting essentials like a lip balm and wallet. Best of all, the pants can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, thanks to their tapered leg, sleek black shade, and side seams, which look professional and chic in more formal settings.

For more casual outings and everyday activities, dress the pants down by styling them with The Luxe Rib Scoop-neck Tee, which offers an ultra-soft, fine-rib cotton construction with just a hint of stretch. Depending on the weather, wear the tee alone or under a cardigan or sweater. Alternatively, there’s also The Boxy Crew in Cashmere for extra warmth with equal parts comfort and style. Our tester loved how versatile it was, noting she could wear it «with jeans, trousers, over dresses, or with slip skirts,» thanks to its boxy silhouette and oversized fit. Plus, «It also has a good weight» — not too heavy or light — courtesy of its temperature-regulating properties.

A timeless trench, like The Modern Trench Coat, will serve you well for seasons to come. With details like a double-breasted front, storm flap, slanted pockets, and a back vent with a button tab, the coat is as functional as it is stylish. Bonus: It’s made from 100 percent organic cotton, with a lining crafted from recycled polyester.

View on Quince.com Why We Love It

  • Quince minimizes waste and costs by sourcing directly from makers, cutting out middlemen, and reducing overhead costs — all without compromising quality or affordability.

What to Consider

  • We've noticed that the pieces don't hold up perfectly over time.

Quince is a direct-to-consumer clothing brand launched in 2018, but since then, the company has expanded to offer accessories, jewelry, furnishings, and more, making it a one-stop shop for high-quality goods at an affordable price. Take their super-soft, under-$50 Mongolian Cashmere Tee, which is crafted from 100 percent Grade-A Mongolian cashmere, signifying the highest quality on the market — that’s sourced ethically and sustainably. T+L senior editor Jackie Cucco described it as «so soft and lightweight, so I don’t get overheated like I would in a long-sleeve sweater.» She also appreciated its versatility, saying, «It’s polished enough to wear out to dinner or the office when you want something more elevated than a plain white tee.» Plus, it comes in a slew of color and pattern options in standard and extended sizes 1X to 3X. Other Quince tops we love include the Cotton Modal Scoop Neck T-shirt, Merino Wool Collared Cable Cardigan, and Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck Sweater.

We also tried the 100 percent European Linen Pants, which our tester called «streamlined and sleek» and comfortable enough to wear «on a flight or car drive, and then out to dinner.» Thanks to their slightly cropped length, the pants are especially great for plane bathrooms since they won’t drag on the floor. The lightweight linen construction makes them breathable, durable, and naturally hypoallergenic. We also like the Ponte Straight Leg Pants for a non-linen alternative.

Dresses like the 100 percent Washable Silk Slip Dress are also ideal for travel since they’re great for layering and offer maximum comfort with minimal restriction compared to pants. Available in both standard and extended sizes, this particular pick is popular for its 100 percent mulberry silk construction, which is machine-washable for easy care. Should you get cold, simply throw on a jacket like the 100 percent Washed Leather Bomber, which adds a cool, edgy vibe to any outfit. Plus, it’s made from biodegradable leather and produced in a tannery that focuses on sustainability, using less energy and water and reducing waste: A win-win in our book.

  • Spanx offers inclusive sizing and versatile, comfortable, and stylish clothing made with high-quality materials, sometimes complete with smoothing support and compression.

What to Consider

  • While Spanx is known for casual and travel-friendly clothing, its formal or business attire options can be limited.

Spanx first made a name for itself in shapewear, but today, it offers an impressive range of athleisure, loungewear, and everyday essentials in various sizes and styles. Travelers are especially fond of the brand’s AirEssentials line, a collection of featherweight, ultra-breathable loungewear made from a soft, airy, and non-restrictive fabric that holds up well even after multiple wears. The AirEssentials Tapered Pants are perfect for long travel days. While undeniably comfortable, T+L associate editor Anna Popp loved how polished they looked compared to traditional sweatpants, noting their resemblance to stylish trousers with cuffed ankles. She also praised their durability, mentioning that even after years of frequent travel and countless washes, they still look as good as new. The waistband, she added, is «super comfortable and stretchy,» while the slightly cropped leg makes them «easy to wear with sneakers.»

For a complete airplane outfit, she pairs the pants with the AirEssentials Half Zip, which she loves for its «oversized collar for style and comfort.» She’s also quick to highlight its breathability, noting that she hardly ever has to take it off when the airplane cabin feels stuffy. For added versatility, consider layering the half zip over a tee or tank, like the AirEssentials Tie-waist Tank Dress or Jersey High Neck Tank, which offers subtle smoothing compression for gentle support during long travel days, along with a breathable jersey construction and four-way stretch for all-day comfort. The PerfectFit Ponte Slim Straight Pant offers the same smoothing properties and stretch, albeit with a more formal look and feel. Best of all, it’s free of zippers, buttons, and pockets. We also like the Booty Boost Full Length Leggings paired with the AirEssentials Crewneck.

  • Patagonia offers high-performance outdoor apparel with an emphasis on sustainability, durability, and versatility.

What to Consider

  • Some outdoor-specific products have limited sizing and may be bulkier than other brands, making them less ideal for select customers or those seeking lightweight options.

Patagonia is renowned for its performance apparel, making it a favorite among active travelers and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels. The Fleetwith Skort is one of our favorite pieces for comfort and versatility on the trail or in everyday wear. Made from recycled polyester and spandex, it stands out for its contoured saddle-shaped hemline for comfort and enhanced mobility. Additional highlights include an elasticized waistband, drawcord closure, and two pockets for hands-free storage of essentials like keys, cash, and cards.

Additionally, the Chambeau Rock Pants, which our tester described as «the most versatile hiking pants I have ever had,» are a must-have for any traveler’s wardrobe.» She’s also quick to call out the pants’ «utmost comfort with a breathable fabric that allows for a full range of motion, whether hiking, fishing by the lake, or playing in the fields.» The brand’s Long-sleeved Capilene Cool Daily Shirt is equally versatile, designed for both the trail and the water. Not only is this long-sleeve top temperature-regulating and fast-drying, but it also includes odor-control technology to help maintain freshness.

For an extra layer of warmth, the Retro Pile Fleece Jacket is a great choice, featuring 100 percent recycled polyester double-sided shearling for supreme softness. «It’s also extremely insulating like I can put this jacket on and feel instantly toasty, which is great for cold weather or layering on a chilly hike,» our tester said.

  •  Aritzia is known for its stylish basics, tailored fits, and timeless wardrobe staples with a modern-meets-minimalist aesthetic.

What to Consider

  • The brand has a strict 30-day return policy, with only 14 days to receive a full refund before returns are issued as merchandise credit.

For effortlessly cool yet elevated looks, Aritzia has you covered. Shoppers can choose from a slew of wardrobe staples, including the aptly named Effortless Pants, which won our tester over for its «smooth, silky, crepe-y, and very airy and lightweight» fabric, which «looks and feels very premium and high-quality.» Alternatively, for an elegant, feminine-inspired touch, swap the pants for Twirl Pleated Skirt, a high-rise midi number made with drapey semi-sheer chiffon. The elastic waistband ensures optimal comfort, while the delicate pleats add movement. And with 13 colors to choose from — including burgundy, black, and baby pink — it’s easy to find the perfect shade to suit your style preferences.

In the colder months, stay warm sans sacrificing style by wrapping yourself in The Constant Coat, which our tester described as «a ridiculously warm jacket made with high-quality wool.» Perfect for chilly temps and windy days, we were impressed by how it both looks and feels like a luxury piece, with our tester noting, «I got so many compliments when I wore it in casual settings like the office or to a nicer dinner.»

Dressier occasions call for polished pieces, but that doesn’t mean you need to put in extra effort to look put together. For a refined look that requires minimal effort, consider a jumpsuit. These travel-friendly one-piece outfits save packing space and make it easy to get ready on the go. The Property Jumpsuit is among our favorites, with its cowl neck, ultra-wide legs, and drapey matte satin material that’s as chic as it is lightweight.

  • Columbia offers durable, innovative, and high-performance outerwear for cold temps at wallet-friendly prices.

What to Consider

  • Some styles can be bulky, and color options may be limited depending on the item.

Columbia is one of the top outerwear brands on the market, and we’re particularly fond of the Mountain Croo III Mid Down Jacket for its attention to detail. T+L writer Anne Taylor noted, «The down is compressed and looks like it’s sewn down in a block pattern, so that gives me the impression it won’t shift around over time.» Additional thoughtful design elements include a discreet interior zippered pocket and advanced technologies like Omni-Heat, which helps retain body heat while staying breathable, and Omni-Tech, which sheds water and releases excess heat to keep you dry, even in pouring rain. Additionally, even after multiple wears over several weeks, the jacket still looked brand-new.

For a shorter but equally warm option, the water-repellent Pike Lake II Cropped Jacket is our top pick for the same reasons. «Like most Columbia products, this jacket looks and feels high-quality,» remarked our tester. She also appreciated the lined pockets for added warmth and noted the jacket’s durability, saying, «I didn’t see any loose stitching.»

Even heavy rains are no match for the Weekend Adventure II Long Shell Jacket, which keeps you dry without weighing you down, courtesy of back venting for added breathability. There’s also a drawcord-adjustable waist for a customizable fit, chin guards to prevent chafing and an attached hood with a bonded brim and peripheral vision adjustability.

To keep your core extra warm, snag the Benton Springs Fleece Vest, which, as its name suggests, features a plush fleece fabric. With seven color options in petite, standard, and plus sizes, it’s an excellent choice for all body types. The foldable collar, which can be adjusted depending on the temperature, is a bonus.

  • This hip swimwear brand is known for its chic designs, ultra-soft and durable fabrics, and pieces that can be easily mixed and matched.

What to Consider

  • Monday Swimwear offers limited prints and patterns, and the high-quality fabric requires delicate care.

While there are dozens of swimwear brands to choose from, Monday Swimwear stands out for its fashion-forward designs and use of high-quality, sustainable fabrics like recycled nylon. Our tester particularly loved the Clovelly Top and Argentina Bottom, even naming them her top picks for all warm-weather vacations. She was especially impressed with the stitching and material, describing it as «luxuriously silky and soft,» making the pieces feel like a worthwhile investment. The top provided ample support for both swimming and lounging courtesy of built-in underwire cups, adjustable shoulder straps, and a self-tie back. Meanwhile, the bottom’s high-cut leg and high-waisted fit were flattering and comfortably snug at the waist.

If you prefer a one-piece suit, the Sausalito One Piece is a great option since it has a comfortable scoop neckline, built-in bust support, adjustable straps, and a high-leg cut that offers a flattering silhouette. It also doubles as a bodysuit, perfect for styling with shorts or skirts or layering under dresses, seamlessly taking you from the beach to the bar and beyond.

Regardless of which suit you choose, a stylish cover-up is a must, and the chic Mallorca Dress is a great option. The breezy maxi dress has sultry cut-out accents, a plunging neckline, high slits, and a wrap-around tie, offering both sophistication and adaptability.

Tips for Buying Travel Clothing

Choose versatile items

Whether packing for a trip or curating your everyday wardrobe, opting for versatile items is essential. To simplify the process, keep an eye out for mix-and-match pieces, especially those in neutral hues and classic styles. Not only will investing in these key pieces save you time when it comes to everyday style, but it will also help you pack more efficiently since you’ll require fewer items.

Look for travel-friendly pieces

When shopping for clothes, look for pieces with travel-friendly features, including packability, breathability, protectiveness, and durability. While specifics will vary depending on the destination, lightweight items that fold or roll easily help maximize suitcase space, while breathable fabrics keep you comfortable in many climates. Water- and wrinkle-resistant options may also come in handy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best material for travel clothing?

Comfort, durability, and versatility are all key factors to consider when shopping for travel-friendly apparel. With that in mind, the best materials for travel clothing include cashmere for its excellent insulation and ability to regulate body temperature; linen for its breathability and lightness; polyester for its fast-drying properties, wrinkle resistance, and durability; spandex for its comfort, flexibility, and stretch; and nylon for its robust yet surprisingly lightweight nature.

What should I wear on a plane?

While what you wear on a plane can vary by style preference, opt for loose-fitting styles, such as leggings or joggers, and dress in layers. While planes are usually cool due to air conditioning, temperatures can fluctuate during the flight, so dressing in layers helps you stay comfortable. Additionally, choose slip-on shoes or sneakers for easy removal at security, and prioritize comfort above all.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

For this story, Lauren Dana Ellman leveraged her expertise as a travel and fashion writer to pore through testing insights to determine the best clothing brands for travel. In addition to combing through T+L editor and tester reviews, she also considered brands she loves and frequently wears for travel days and packs for trips, including Spanx, Alo Yoga, and Quince.
