Traveling with a laptop gives you the freedom to get work done or enjoy entertainment on the go, but they can be tricky to safely store when flying. With so many varying restrictions on carry-on luggage sizing, bringing your laptop along on a trip can become a bit of a headache if you don’t have a solid spot to house it, particularly if it doesn’t fit within your one personal item bag. Cabin-friendly suitcases with a separate laptop compartment are the perfect solution, providing a designated space specifically designed to protect your computer.

With so many choices for carry-on suitcases with laptop compartments on the market, we helped narrow down the options with a series of tests. We tried out more than 250 carry-on suitcases and picked out our favorites with laptop compartments for this article. After packing each suitcase for a four-day trip, we maneuvered them through obstacle courses to test the agility of the wheels and sturdiness of the handles. We also dropped them off tables and hit them with baseball bats to test durability. All bags were evaluated based on their capacity, value, design, and durability, as well as the ease of maneuverability, comfort, and portability. We travel with each suitcase for a minimum of six months and update this article with our findings.

Best Overall

Carl Friedrik The Carry-on X

The Best Carry-on Suitcases With Laptop Compartments, Tested and Reviewed

Credit: Carl Friedrik $695 at Nordstrom View on Carlfriedrik.com $695 at Bloomingdales Why We Love It

  • It’s made from a combination of polycarbonate and aluminum to offer optimal protection for your laptop.

What to Consider

  • There's no room for overpacking since it uses latches instead of zippers.

The Carry-on X from Carl Friedrik ticks many of our boxes for its high-quality materials, thoughtful layout, and attractive appearance. Available in six colorways with contrasting leather accents, it’s a hybrid of Makloron polycarbonate and aluminum—the combination of which was so robust that we felt only an electric power tool could penetrate it. The material isn’t a total guarantee against damage, but it does offer more security compared to more lightweight options. The front pocket is made from the same material that encases the exterior, and to offer travelers extra reassurance against dents and dings, the laptop sleeve straps in your computer with a Velcro closure.

This suitcase uses latches instead of zippers, which gives it a sleek look and a secure closure that won’t rip. However, this also means you cannot overpack it since it doesn’t have the flexibility that a zipper sometimes gives. Inside are two main compartments with a total of 45 liters of capacity, which offered us enough room to fit three day’s worth of clothing. The removable compression pad also came in handy to squish down clothing and, in turn, create even more packing space. Despite its weight of 10.4 pounds, the bag rolls exceptionally well on most surfaces, and the telescoping handle was stable at every height option. Overall, the bag feels solidly built, so you can feel confident storing your laptop and other valuables inside it.

Best Design

Dagne Dover Smaller Seattle Carry-on Luggage

The Best Carry-on Suitcases With Laptop Compartments, Tested and Reviewed

Credit: Dagne Dover View on Bloomingdales Why We Love It

  • This small bag is full of thoughtful design features that make packing it and using it easier.

What to Consider

  • It's on the heavier side, especially considering how small it is.

We fell in love with Dagne Dover’s soft yet sturdy neoprene bags a long time ago, so we were ecstatic when the company launched its first luggage line in June 2024. This small carry-on impressed us with its design, offering a sleek-looking softside suitcase that has plenty of organizational features to make up for this size. Even though it’s one of the smaller carry-ons we’ve tested, we were able to fit a full packing list inside, including several pairs of pants, shirts, a toiletry bag, a fanny pack, undergarments, two pairs of shoes, and a laptop. It was a tight squeeze, so we recommend using packing cubes to keep everything neat.

The interior of the bag splits like a clamshell, and both sides have compression straps to lock everything into place. One side also has a panel that zips shut for added organization, with two mesh pockets on top. The outside of the bag has a small zip pocket on the back and two large pockets on the front that we found particularly useful for holding items like a laptop, paperwork, or other essentials. You can also unzip the back of the pocket to access the main compartment of the bag, which is a feature we love because it gives you easy access to those items without opening your entire suitcase on the floor of the airport. We thought the bag did feel a little heavy and clunky for its small size, but it was easy to maneuver on various terrains and we never had issues with the zippers or wheels. «It’s a beautiful softside bag that feels sturdy and durable,» our Travel + Leisure senior testing editor Jackie Cucco said after trying this bag for the first time. «It’s worth the hype if you can swing the price.»

Best Lightweight

Calpak Luka Carry-on

The Best Carry-on Suitcases With Laptop Compartments, Tested and Reviewed

Credit: Calpak $215 $162 at Calpaktravel.com Why We Love It

  • It weighs just 6.4 pounds, and its laptop compartment is one of the largest among our picks.

What to Consider

  • Its handle is looser compared to other picks.

Every pound counts when you’re traveling with a carry-on, and the Calpak Luca Carry-on is one of the most lightweight of our picks. It weighs just 6.4 pounds when empty, and yet it packs a lot into its compact size. It has multiple pockets in addition to the laptop compartment, including two pockets on either side of its exterior and a couple more inside the bag. As for the laptop compartment, it’s the largest among our picks with space for computers up to 17 inches.

The carry-on is easy to tote even when packed—something to which we can personally attest after more than a year of traveling with it. While easier to roll on two wheels than four and across smooth floors rather than uneven surfaces, we could load it into vehicles and carry it up steps with little to no effort. We only wish the handle was sturdier to better facilitate maneuverability. Its puffy polyester material, though prone to scratches and scuffs, suffered no major damage after we repeatedly threw it on the floor and hit it with a bat since it acts as extra padding. Plus, thanks to malleable material, the bag has some give, making it all the easier to squish into an overhead bin.

The Details: Fits laptops up to 17 inches | 21 x 13.75 x 9 inches | 6.4 pounds | 31-liter capacity | Polyester

Best Expandable

Arlo Skye The Expandable Carry-On Max

Credit: Arlo Skye View on Arloskye.com Why We Love It

  • It is the most capacious of our picks, and it expands 2 inches to offer even more room.

What to Consider

  • Its larger size made it a bit of a squeeze to fit into an overhead bin.

If you want to pack more than the average carry-on can hold, consider the Arlo Skye Expandable Carry-on Max. It has a 48-liter capacity, making it the most capacious of our picks, and it expands 2 inches to offer even more room for bulky gear or any souvenirs you might pick up on your trip. The removable compression pad tamps everything down tight, and the front interior compartments allow you to easily access small items and accessories.

Because of its larger size, it’s a bit of a squeeze to fit into tight overhead bins. The front pocket adds to the bulk, but otherwise, we appreciate that the carry-on is made from quality materials and constructed with a rugged polycarbonate material. It withstood multiple tumbles from a table and thwacks from a bat with no dents or dings (apart from minor scuffs). It also moves just as smoothly as smaller options, owing largely to the wheels. We were especially impressed with how well it could roll up and down curbs compared to others picks, but less so with the telescoping handle. It is prone to jamming at the two lowest heights—fortunately, we don’t anticipate using either of these height options while traveling.

The Details: Fits laptops up to 16 inches | 23 x 14.7 x 9.6 inches | 7 pounds | 48-liter capacity (unexpanded); 58-liter capacity (expanded) | Expands 2 inches | Polycarbonate

Best for Organization

Briggs & Riley ZDX 22-inch Expandable Spinner

The Best Carry-on Suitcases With Laptop Compartments, Tested and Reviewed

Credit: Briggs & Riley $569 at Briggs & Riley Why We Love It

  • There are pockets aplenty to keep everything in order.

What to Consider

  • The carry-on has rounded corners cut into packing space more than similarly sized bags.

With Briggs & Riley’s ZDX Essential Carry-on Expandable Spinner, there is no reason to cram everything into its main compartment. It has pockets aplenty to offer organization and quick access to your essentials. The exterior alone has an open pocket and two zipper pockets of varying sizes. One has a divider—perfect for keeping a couple of books or small items and a laptop. The other is protected with RFID technology. There is also a zipper pocket that could hold a phone and a retractable ID tag on the backside of the bag. Inside are two more pockets that come in handy for accessories and underwear.

We were also impressed by how much it could fit inside it. Its rounded corners cut into packable space more than other Briggs & Riley carry-ons, but it expands 2 inches to afford you a little more wiggle room. With its pert wheels, the carry-on is easy to maneuver even when packed. It could do pirouettes on two or four wheels across different types of surfaces, and we appreciate that the handle extends tall without teetering. Made from a rugged nylon material, it resisted much of what we put it through during our durability test, after which there was only minor scuffing on its base. Visually, the bag is simple and straightforward, but it comes in four colors and—bonus—the option for personalization of up to three characters.

The Details: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (unexpanded); 22 x 14 x 11 inches (expanded) | 8 pounds | 37.2-liter capacity (unexpanded); 46.5-liter capacity (expanded) | Expands 2 inches | Woven nylon

Best Features

Monos Expandable Carry-on Pro

Credit: Monos View on Monos.com Why We Love It

  • It's expandable and comes with extra features like antimicrobial shoe bags and a vegan leather luggage tag with a privacy cover.

What to Consider

  • Its zippers don't run the smoothest.

This expandable version of the popular Monos Carry-on Pro is one of our favorite new pieces from Monos. It features a padded, front zippered pocket that boasts three internal pockets (two slip and one zippered) that are large enough to fit laptops up to 16 inches, as well as additional essentials like tablets, slimmer books, and spare cables. We love that the carry-on also comes with a few extra features, including two antimicrobial shoe bags; a laundry bag; a vegan leather luggage tag with a privacy cover; and a transparent, jelly-like protective cover that you can stretch over the entire suitcase to ward off scuffs.

The suitcase opens evenly like a clamshell, and one side features a large zippered mesh pocket and a smaller, zippered mesh pocket. The opposite half has a removable compression panel, great for maximizing storage, and a small, discreet pocket ideal for storing Bluetooth tracking devices. The suitcase’s polycarbonate shell feels very sturdy and survived a couple of rounds with our baseball bat without incident, and any minimal scuffs were easily buffed out with our fingers. Our main gripe is that the zippers don’t always run the smoothest, especially those for the front zippered pocket which are in a groove and need a little more finessing to zip open and closed.

The Details: Fits laptop up to 16 inches | 8.6 pounds | 22 x 14 x 10 inches | 35.5-liter capacity (unexpanded); 41.5-liter capacity (expanded) | Expands 1.6 inches | Polycarbonate

Best Softside/Hardside Hybrid

Away The Front Pocket Bigger Carry-On

The Best Carry-on Suitcases With Laptop Compartments, Tested and Reviewed

Credit: Away View on Away Travel Why We Love It

  • It has plenty of pockets and a great internal compression panel to cinch everything tight.

What to Consider

  • It's heavy for a carry-on, weighing 9 pounds.

Away recently launched a hardside/softside hybrid featuring a durable polycarbonate shell and a water-resistant nylon front zippered pocket. The front section features four pockets total: two large slip pockets large enough to fit laptops up to 14 inches, a zippered mesh pocket, and a small slip pocket that can fit a Bluetooth tracking device and some pens. The suitcase opens evenly like a clamshell, with one side featuring a wraparound zip pocket with a smaller mesh zip pocket on top of it, and the other side featuring a compression panel, with a zippered mesh pocket one one side and a slip pocket on the other. These features helped us cinch our clothing nice and tight.

We especially appreciated extra touches like a removable, water-resistant laundry bag; a recycled black leather luggage tag; TSA-approved locks; and additional top, side, and underside grab handles that make maneuvering the bag in and out of overhead compartments a piece of cake. Clocking in a 9 pounds, the suitcase is a tad heavy for a carry-on, and its polycarbonate shell experienced some scuffs during testing that we were unable to buff out, even after we used the included scuff eraser. That being said, we appreciated that the zippers and wheels ran smoothly. “This bag is very easy to handle and turns like a dream,” says T+L associate editorial director Morgan Ashley Parker. “The wheels did not get stuck at all.”

The Details: Fits laptops up to 14 inches | 21.7 x 14.4 x 9 inches | 9 pounds | 33-liter capacity | Polycarbonate, nylon

Best Top-loading

Lojel Cubo Small Lite

The Best Carry-on Suitcases With Laptop Compartments, Tested and Reviewed

Credit: Lojel View on Lojel.com

Ideal for hotel rooms with limited floor space, the Lojel Cubo opens from the front, unlike clamshell luggage that splays flat from its spine like a book. This means you can lay the suitcase down, and use the top-loading design to save space instead of opening your entire suitcase. The carry-on reveals a simple interior, but the front compartment offers some organization: Tucked inside is a zipper pocket and two mesh pockets to keep quick-grab items and a laptop. Our favorite feature was the magnetic, quick-access door, which allows access to the main compartment from the front pocket. You can also entirely remove that divider between the front pocket and the main compartment, which is handy to increase the bag’s capacity, especially given its small interior space.

The Cubo Small Lite, much as its name implies, is also lightweight. It’s 6.4 pounds when empty, putting it in the same weight class as the Calpak Luka Carry-on. We could hoist it into an overhead bin with less effort, and it handled hard floors, carpeted surfaces, twists, and turns with aplomb, thanks in part to its smooth-rolling wheels. The lightweight polycarbonate material also makes it durable against wear and tear. It sustained a small hit when we hit it with a bat, but there was no major damage that affected its performance.

The Details: 21.1 x 14.2 x 7.8 inches (unexpanded); 21.1 x 14.2 x 9 inches (expanded) | 6.4 pounds | 29-liter capacity (unexpanded); 35-liter capacity (expanded) | Expands 1.2 inches | Polycarbonate

Best With Charger

July Carry On Pro

The Best Carry-on Suitcases With Laptop Compartments, Tested and Reviewed

Credit: Courtesy of July View on July.com Why We Love It

  • It has an ejectable battery with both USB and FastCharge USB-C to power up a phone and laptop.

What to Consider

  • It has smaller dimensions than some other carry-ons and does not expand.

What sets the July Carry-on Pro apart from its competitors is the built-in, ejectable battery with USB and FastCharge USB-C ports to power up both your phone and laptop. Aside from its charging capabilities, it has a front pocket with a laptop sleeve and padded pockets that can fit laptops up to 15 inches and an iPad Pro.

While its tech features stood out to us, we were also impressed with its smooth handle that you can adjust to 20 different heights. The wheels weren’t as smooth as some other carry-ons when we rolled the bag over carpet, but the suitcase still felt very portable due to it’s compact size. It’s not expandable, but it still felt spacious enough for a few nights away. It also comes with a laundry bag and a compression panel. We also love the color options and the way you can personalize the carry-on with initials or a name.

The Details: Fits laptops up to 15 inches | 21.5 x 15 x 8.5 inches | 8.6 pounds | 42-liter capacity | USB charging port and power bank

Best Budget

Coolife ABS+PC Spinner Trolley

The Best Carry-on Suitcases With Laptop Compartments, Tested and Reviewed

Credit: Amazon $80 $70 at Amazon View on Coolifeluggage.com Why We Love It

  • This lightweight suitcase is reasonably priced, under $100.

What to Consider

  • The wheels are not always easy to maneuver.

For a carry-on that offers solid value, the Coolife Carry On with Pocket fits the bill with the lowest cost on this list. It’s one of the more lightweight bags we tested, and it’s durable as well. We noticed the exterior materials were flexible and hearty enough to stand up to multiple tests, like when we hit it with a baseball bat and shoved it off tabletops without paint chipping, denting, or scratching. However, compared to carry-ons at higher price points, we found that the 360-degree spinner wheels were not as easy to maneuver. The bag rotated smoothly around tight corners only when all four wheels were used, but we had some issues rolling it smoothly over bumps. The interior materials for the zip pockets don’t have much flexibility, so there could be a risk of ripping them if the bag is overpacked. The laptop compartment fits a computer or tablet up to 13.3 inches, and if the interior is overpacked, it’s possible it’d be too tight to fit the laptop safely. If you’re looking to spend under $100, we still think this makes a nice option.

The Details: Fits laptops up to 13.3 inches | 21 x 14 x 9.5 inches | 6.7 pounds | 38-liter capacity | Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and polycarbonate

Other Carry-on Bags We Liked

Some of the bags we tested did not make our main list but still stood out with impressive features or memorable qualities. These pieces are quality options but had something holding them back.

Roverlund Ready-to-roll Cabin Carry-on: Specifically designed to hold pet carriers on top, this carry-on also pairs well with any horizontal personal bag and feels quite durable. That being said, the unique design can make it unstable if the bag on top hangs over the edge.

Calpak Front Pocket Carry-on Luggage: We’re big fans of Calpak’s luggage, and this carry-on is no exception. It’s solidly built with many pockets for organization. However, we felt like the front pocket protrudes too much. When we packed the bag full, it left a bit less room for our laptops.

Db Ramverk Front-access Carry-on: This bag is easy to pack neatly, thanks to plenty of pockets and organizational features throughout. However, the poles of the handles and the laptop sleeve took up a considerable amount of space, and the durability made us question the high price tag.

July Carry-on Pro SnapSleeve: This carry-on has impressive maneuverability and ample pockets for organization. We also love the clever design of the detachable laptop sleeve. Unfortunately, the laptop sleeve came loose when it was dropped from a table, which would have resulted in lost cargo if it were to happen while traveling.

Tips for Buying a Carry-on With a Laptop Compartment

Be sure your laptop model will fit in the suitcase

One of the main things to consider when shopping for a carry-on suitcase with a laptop compartment is the laptop size that it will accommodate. You don’t want to end up squishing your large laptop inside, potentially damaging it or not having it fit at all. It’s wise to leave some extra room; if you have a 13-inch laptop, perhaps look into suitcase models that can hold laptops up to 15 inches, just to give yourself a little wiggle room.

Consider additional organization and access needs

Laptop compartments naturally allow us to access our computer and other items stored up front quickly and easily, though some models are designed for this better than others. A suitcase in which you can access important items quickly without having to completely open the main compartment is paramount, particularly for business travelers. Some have multiple slip pockets within a large front pocket, allowing you to store multiple devices (like a laptop and a tablet) and other small items as well, such as notebooks, pens, your passport, and charging cords. Pay attention to all of the different pockets and other features like zipper access and padding.

Test at home before you travel with it

We recommend always testing your suitcase at home prior to traveling with it to make sure everything works to your standards, including the zippers, wheels and handle. You'll also want to make sure that your laptop fits into the pocket the way you want it to.

Every luggage company has a different return policy and warranty, so it's usually best practice to read your brand's policy ahead of traveling to address any defects or concerns before it's too late. Some brands have limited lifetime warranties that cover manufacturing defects, but most companies won't cover general wear and tear, damages due to misuse, or if your suitcase breaks while traveling with it (you'll sometimes have to take that up with the airline or airport).
