While I hate ironing, there are few things I find more frustrating than looking at a photo of myself and thinking, “I should have ironed those pants.” That’s why I invested in a travel steamer many years ago. While the steamer I bought was perfectly compact—so small that it fit into a tiny duffel bag—it didn’t have the best steam output, and it would take me 10-15 minutes to iron one piece of clothing. I never want to make that mistake again.

At Travel + Leisure, we tested 15 travel steamers from different brands, using them on different types of fabric, taking note of their portability, ease of use, performance, quality, and value. We balled different garments up for over 24 hours to make them as wrinkled as possible and then steamed them using the different steamers, which will continue testing over a six-month period. • Tips for Buying a Steamer

  Prioritize portability

  When shopping for a travel steamer, you should prioritize portability if you don’t want the appliance to become a hassle to travel with. The most portable travel steamers are smaller in size so they can easily fit into all types of bags from weekenders to checked luggage without taking up too much space or adding much weight, but remember that smaller sizes often mean smaller water tanks.

  Think about types of garments you typically steam

  To avoid damaging your clothes, you should consider the type of garments you plan to steam before settling on a particular travel steamer. Some travel steamers allow you to toggle between different output settings, like low or high, which allow you to adjust the appliance’s steam to a level that’s suitable for your garment. For example, a more delicate fabric, like silk, might require lower steam output than a thicker fabric like denim. Other steamers, like the Nori Press, allow you to explicitly set the steamer to the type of fabric you’re steaming. Then, there are some steamers that don’t allow you to adjust its steam output at all. When shopping for these, you should make sure the output is high or low enough to be compatible with the type of garments you steam most.

  Look for extra features and attachments

  Some travel steamers come with extra features and attachments that can help you prepare your fabric before steaming, or give your clothes a more pristine look after steaming. For example, the Electrolux Garment Steamer comes with a bristle brush that can loosen the fibers of your fabric before steaming, and the Steamery Cirrus 3 includes a steaming pad, heatproof silicone cover, and storage bag. Other steamers may also have a built-in iron. Other accessories a steamer may come with include a lint brush or a special attachment for delicates.
