As a first-time mom of twins, I was overwhelmed enough to sit out travel for their first two years, but when my kids hit the toddler stage, it was off to the races. They're 10 years old now, with passports full of stamps and tons of stories to tell from our family vacations around the world.
I know from hard-earned experience that successful travel with kids requires specialized knowledge and planning, as well as a bunch of specialized gear. Ride-on suitcases can be a great option for packing kids’ essentials and giving them a place to take a load off when the airport hustle gets too exhausting. Plus, these suitcases are just plain fun and great for building independence and a love of the journey.
To highlight the best in class, we tested ride-on suitcases in real-world environments, packing them with kids' essentials and traveling with them via various modes of transportation. We tested them for design, maneuverability, capacity, organization, durability, and value. We then traveled with all suitcases for six months and updated this article accordingly. The Aotos L2 is a newly tested addition to this list, so we are currently testing it in the real world and will update this article after six months with any relevant findings.

This colorful suitcase is fun, durable, and offers a sturdy ride for kids while withstanding rough handling.
What to Consider
-
It was a little difficult to spin around, and we would add more zippered compartments inside to prevent items from shifting around during travels.
Out of all the ride-on suitcases we tested, this was our favorite. It’s shaped somewhat like a motorcycle and has a seatbelt for added safety when kids sit on it. It features two packing compartments: one with a strap divider and the other with pocketed dividers (though zippers would better secure smaller items, which shifted around during our travels). We thought this suitcase was just right for a long weekend away, fitting two gymnastics leotards, three swimsuits, two pairs of shoes, three Squishmallows, and three days' worth of undergarments, pants, and shirts for an 8-year-old girl.
It is lightweight and has a low profile, making it easy for children to push, roll, or ride. We thought the sturdy wheels performed well on various surfaces like carpet, floors, and concrete, and handled turns well, but it was more challenging to spin the suitcase. The handle isn’t as sturdy as an adult suitcase, but we thought it was sufficient for regular use. The 8-year-old tester really put this suitcase to the test, riding it, standing on it, and even jumping on it, and the suitcase proved to be durable with no broken parts or scratches. And after six months of use, it still looks great.
We think it’s worth the price thanks to its durability, fun design, and practicality. The rideable shape makes it engaging for children, and it is among the most enjoyable and reliable ride-on suitcases we tested. You can choose from a selection of designs to suit different interests, including unicorns, dogs, motorcycles, and more.

This durable case supports enough weight to carry an adult, and you can use the fold-out seat to hold travel bags when children are not riding it.
What to Consider
-
This suitcase is one of the priciest and heaviest options we tried.
The MiaMily luggage bag is a sturdy and versatile travel companion designed for both adults and children. Its design is most similar to an adult suitcase, with the addition of a retractable seat that can support up to 220 pounds, so even some adults can use it when they need to rest their legs in an airport. When you’re not using it as a ride-on, the seat can conveniently hold a diaper bag or other small travel bags.
We liked the design both inside and out, with two large interior compartments that fully zip around to secure items in place and several pockets for smaller items. One compartment is waterproof, which is handy for toiletries. We found the 43-liter capacity spacious, holding clothing, towels, toiletries, a stuffed animal, and blankets for a toddler. It features latches instead of zippers to secure the suitcase closed, and they stayed secure throughout our travels.
The handle has three heights, and the wheels rolled smoothly over different types of surfaces. It’s definitely a heavy suitcase, weighing over 9 pounds, but it felt extremely durable, with nice weight distribution. Plus, the more sophisticated design makes it versatile as kids get older. Our only gripe with this bag after six months of regular use is the lack of an expansion feature, but we still reach for it frequently.

This checked bag has a 77-liter capacity, giving it the most packing space of any suitcase on this list.
What to Consider
-
The suitcase weighs over 14 pounds, so be careful not to go over airline weight limits when you pack it full.
If you prefer to travel with checked luggage, this is the largest model on this list. While all of the other options are suitable as carry-ons, you will need to check this bag while flying. It has the same zipperless design, interior dividers, retractable seat, and weight capacity as the MiaMily carry-on option above, so it also can support up to 220 pounds. The only real difference is the size, with a spacious interior that allows for easy packing for multiple family members or weeklong trips.
Like the carry-on above, it felt extremely durable; after traveling with it, dropping it, and pushing it against walls, it held up well, with only one small dent at the bottom of the back panel. The seat felt secure, with a seatbelt for safety, and you can also use the seat to hold travel bags. We tested it with a 12-year-old, who could easily sit on the luggage seat without her feet touching the ground. This is quite a heavy bag, weighing just over 14 pounds, so be mindful when packing it full that you don’t go over any airline weight limits. We also thought the handle was difficult to extend at times, and the wheels struggled a bit over rough terrain, but did fine otherwise. It has held up remarkably well after six months of regular use and shows no signs of damage, scuffing, or dents.
The Details: Recommended for kids ages 2 and up | Supports up to 220 pounds | 25.9 x 17.7 x 12.2 inches | 14.2 pounds | 77-liter capacity | Includes seatbelt | Polycarbonate, polypropylene, polyester

This lightweight and multifunctional option serves as both a ride-on suitcase and a seat pad during flights, with an included mattress feature.
What to Consider
-
This compact case offers limited packing space, especially when you travel with the mattress pad, and it does not have a seatbelt.
This ride-on suitcase from Norwegian company Stokke has some unique features that make it stand out from other options on the market, including a mattress pad that parents can place over an airplane seat to make it more comfortable for kids. The sturdy frame of the suitcase supports children riding on top (up to 77 pounds), but there's no seatbelt for added security, and the attachable strap makes it more difficult to pull than a more traditional luggage handle. That being said, the suitcase itself is lightweight, and the smooth swivel wheels were sturdy and easy to maneuver on flat surfaces with a child riding on top. We tried it with a 7-year-old boy who weighs 70 pounds, a 9-year-old girl who weighs 60 pounds, and a small toddler, and felt that the suitcase was able to withstand all of their different statures, heights, and weights. The kids thought it was comfortable as well and had fun riding on it.
It’s on the smaller size for a suitcase, with a 20-liter capacity that is made even smaller when you travel with the sleeping pad inside. The interior feels more like a toy chest than a suitcase since it opens via the top lid, so organization can be tricky unless you use packing cubes to separate your belongings. We didn’t find ourselves using it very often during our six-month testing period because of this—while it’s great for shorter trips, there isn’t much space for longer ones. Still, in addition to the mattress pad feature, we also appreciated that it comes with vinyl stickers that kids can use to decorate and personalize the outside of the suitcase.
The Details: Recommended for kids ages 3-7 | Supports up to 77 pounds | 18 x 14 x 7.87 | 6.6 pounds | 20-liter capacity | Plastic, polyester, cotton

This well-organized case features multiple interior pockets and zippered compartments to keep contents tidy.
What to Consider
-
This case is for young toddlers, and the measurements might be too large for some overhead bins.
If you’d rather have the organization of a traditional suitcase rather than a toy chest on wheels, we loved the interior pockets and zippers of this Mountain Buggy option, which reminds us of some underseaters that we’ve tested. Inside, there’s one main compartment, a closed-off zipper section that can fit a laptop or books, and a mesh zipper pocket for smaller items. We were able to fit a week’s worth of outfits for both an 8-month-old and a 2-year-old. The seat is removable, and it holds the lowest weight of all the suitcases on this list—only 33 pounds—but the recommended age range is lower as well. The seat has an adjustable safety harness that kids older than 3 would not fit into (and some large toddlers may not fit, either).
The wheels spin smoothly, and we thought it was easy to change directions quickly, though it was a bit harder to maneuver on carpet. The base felt wide and sturdy with a 2-year-old sitting on top, though the wheels are small and are not designed well for tough terrain. We also noticed that the handle didn’t feel as sturdy as traditional suitcases. Because this ride-on is shorter than typically carry-on suitcases, even our 2-year-old tester was able to push it around on his own, although the handle was a little too high for him (it was comfortable for the adults, though). We liked that the seat is removable because that means you can use it as a regular suitcase as well, making it a versatile travel option for the whole family. The dimensions may be too large for some overhead bins (an issue we ran into during our six-month testing period), but when kids are not riding on the suitcase, you can push the base inward to make it narrower.
The Details: Recommended for kids ages 9 months to 3 years | Supports up to 33 pounds | 22.5 x 16 x 10 inches | 7.5 pounds with seat | Includes safety harness | Polycarbonate

This sturdy motorized suitcase can reach speeds up to 6.2 mph and hold up to 242 pounds.
What to Consider
-
It's too short for taller individuals (or those with long legs) to ride comfortably.
The Aotos L2 caught everyone's attention when we tried it out. This smart suitcase can safely hold up to 242 pounds, so it's a ride-on option for kids and adults. Once we got used to the throttle and turning mechanics, we were zipping around at speeds up to 6.2 mph with surprising stability. The lights, the app controls, and the ability to track speed and mileage made it feel genuinely high-tech, and, in our opinion, worth more than the $500 price tag. We also found it to be impressively durable, with no signs of scuffs or dents after almost everyone in our New York office had a turn using it. Because it is motorized, we would only recommend this to adults or older children under adult supervision.
Smart features aside, it's also a solid carry-on bag. The front pocket opens like a traditional laptop compartment, making it easy to access tech without needing to get into the main space. Inside, there’s a deep 31-liter compartment that fit our full carry-on packing list, plus a compression strap to keep items secure. At around 17 pounds empty, it’s on the heavier side, so lifting it overhead took some muscle. But we found the sturdy handle and smooth wheels made it easy to pull behind or push in front when walking around. Sure, not everyone needs a motorized suitcase, but if it's within your budget, this is an undeniably cool travel product.
The Details: Recommended for adults | Supports up to 242 pounds | 21.7 x 14.2 x 9.9 inches | 17.3 pounds | ABS, polycarbonate

Other Ride-on Suitcases We Liked
Here are a few more options we tested with pros and cons worth considering.
Airwheel SE3S Smart Rideable Suitcase Scooter: This suitcase is rugged and built to last, with multiple speed settings for hard surfaces like laminate and carpet, plus fun features like an integrated app, color-changing lights, and a «find my bag» alarm. However, its heavy weight, limited storage space, and hefty price tag limit its practicality for everyday travel.

Micro Scooter Luggage Junior LED: This ride-on suitcase has a unique design, with light-up wheels and a scooter with an adjustable handlebar. However, its limited interior space and bulky design make it less practical for carrying a lot of items or for young children traveling long distances.

Cegali 2025 Ride-on Suitcase for Kids: Our toddler-aged tester loved the buckle and the stickers of this ride-on suitcase, but we had some trouble wheeling it through the airport as it tended to veer off at an angle instead of rolling straight. We also wish the handle were placed a little higher.

Our Testing Process
We tested ride-on suitcases in real-world environments, packing them with kids' essentials and using them for travel by air, train, and car. First, we examined each suitcase’s design, fabrics, hardware, and organizational features. We took notes on whether we thought the design was practical for both riding and carrying, and noted any features that made it easy to use. We packed each bag full of kids’ clothing, toys, and travel essentials, using all pockets and compartments. We buckled kids in (for all of the suitcases that had safety belts) and tested out the wheels on different surfaces to see if they were smooth and stable. We also made sure that the suitcases felt supportive, stable, and durable the entire time we used them. After our initial testing period, we continued using the products for a minimum of six months and updated this story as needed. The Aotos L2 is a newly tested addition to this list, so we are currently testing it in the real world and will update this article after six months with any relevant findings.
Tips for Buying a Ride-on Suitcase
Read age and size requirements carefully
Always check the age and size requirements to make sure a ride-on suitcase meets your specific needs because safety is the most important factor. The manufacturer usually recommends an age range and a weight limit. A ride-on suitcase that's too small may be unstable or unable to support your kids’ weight, and one that's too large may not provide adequate protection. Proper sizing prevents accidents (and reduces stress for all involved). Some of our options above are only suitable for toddlers, while others are durable enough for adults to sit on as well.
Make sure it's spacious enough for your travels
Choose a ride-on suitcase with enough space for your kid's travel essentials, including clothes, toys, and accessories. Like traditional suitcases, ride-on options come in various sizes, ranging from carry-ons to checked luggage, and different travelers may have different preferences. A case that's too small is hardly worth the extra bulk of a ride-on and won't hold everything you need, leading to inconvenient overflow in your other luggage.
Decide what features you'll need
When shopping for ride-on luggage, consider what features best suit your unique travel needs, such as organizational details, safety belts, or handlebar adjustments. For instance, some models have removable or retractable seat designs, including harnesses for added safety, while others offer extras like fold-out mattresses for napping on the go. Some of them have more interior pockets than others. Some of them include fun stickers for customization.
