The dressing room’s fluorescent lights and small mirrors are usually enough to distract me from trying on swimsuits at the store. However, as a person who not only lives in the beach city of Los Angeles with an apartment pool but also regularly travels to international and domestic coasts, finding my go-to bikinis is a must. That’s why I’ve turned to online shopping when it comes to swimwear. But this often results in me over-buying multiple sizes to upend the fear of them not fitting correctly, or lacking in support. So, ladies, where can we win here?

Well, we tested out 60 bikinis (one tester in an extra-small to medium size and one in a large or bigger size) to make sure your summer goes swimmingly. We tried popular bikini styles from brands like Abercrombie and Fitch and J.Crew, noting the fit, comfort, performance, quality, and coverage so that you can finally find the one that works for you (and you can even pair them with our favorite cover-ups). Below, we compiled a list of our top 11 picks, including our crowned winner from Albion Fit.

The trophy for best overall bikini goes to this Albion Olivia Swim Crop top, paired with the brand’s Almost Cheeky Bottoms. The sizes run up to a 2XL with 21 trendy hues to choose from (some of my favorite patterns are pink gingham and golden hour). The fully-lined top consists of a built-in shelf bra with wide straps and removable cups. We wore it while swimming, tanning, and walking around, and nothing shifted at all (the armholes are so roomy that our testers said they had a full range of motion, while providing sufficient support). Although removable bra pads can sometimes be unwanted, these are comfortable, as is the buttery soft fabric. 

The higher cut bottoms highlight a modern style while providing cheeky coverage (but we would still compare the top and bottoms to a nearly tankini amount of coverage). Both pieces kept their shape after washing, allowing for a flattering fit after multiple uses. The suit didn’t get waterlogged after hanging in the water, so we think it would even be ideal for beach activities like paddle boarding, biking, spike ball, and more. This two-piece isn’t necessarily budget-friendly, but with how unique and trendy the style is, we think it’s worth the investment.

Abercrombie and Fitch is known to offer trendy styles, and this bikini is no exception. It’s sold in 19 different colors and patterns, and has optional matching bottoms (which our testers felt were secure and comfortable) that are described to provide moderate coverage. The fabric is pretty soft and durable—plus, the wide, adjustable straps are a huge plus. Overall, we determined that this is more of a “lounging around the pool” suit versus wearing it for water activities, since there is no padding and the cups have the potential to move. I personally own this bathing suit and have found it to be exceptionally stylish for aesthetic beach pictures.

This top does it all, whether you’re sporting it at the pool, lake, or spa like we did. The straps slide to provide more or less length if needed, while serving excellent coverage for larger-chested women (yes, there are removable pads). We paired the bikini top with the Grace Mini Swim Short, which aren’t restrictive, but felt more contained and secure than any other swimsuit we’ve tried. Overall, the suit fabric was thick and bounces back quickly, doesn’t rub uncomfortably on your body, and may even double as activewear, if you’d like. The price point is quite high, but considering this is the most versatile, supportive suit on this list, we deemed it worth the investment. Should you be looking to rent some jet skis or kayaks, this is a highly functional style for you.

The Jolyn Jocelyn Bikini Top is the perfect example as to why we have two different testers with varying sizes test one style. The top fits our tester with a smaller bust perfectly, offering lots of comfort and support for a range of activities. We wish the sizes went up higher than an extra-large and offered a thicker, adjustable strap for more support. With that said, we love that the comes in a slew of color options. The suit is sun-protectant and chlorine-resistant with reinforced stitching so that it stays put during water activities. This style is perfect for swim movements, as we wore them while in a river, hot tub, and pool, and didn’t get bogged down by water (plus, it takes less than an hour to dry outside). We paired it with these simple Andy Bikini Bottoms, which are quick-drying and available in even more colors.

We did find that the top runs small, so we recommend sizing up to avoid spillage for larger busts. Our tester with a larger bust size described the top as bra-like, but less intensive activity, as it may shift a bit during movement (specifically the bra pads). Overall, it feels soft, strong, and durable after testing it in the water regularly. The matching ruched bottoms offer medium to full coverage, and we found the bottoms were a bit more comfortable when wet, since the fabric stretches a bit.

After four days of consistent use in the pool and hot tubs, T+L associate editor Anna Popp found this two-piece to be super comfortable. It features a deep V-neckline that provides enough fabric to feel covered while still offering the less coverage look some may want. She particularly loves how high-quality the fabric is due to the double-layered stitching and how the color doesn’t waver after wearing. The scoop-neck design is my personal favorite style, because even if it accidentally moves, it doesn’t show too much. Like we did, you can match the top with the medium coverage sculpt bikini bottoms that offer full coverage.

This is the bathing suit you go to when you want to show a little extra skin effortlessly. We recommend sizing up first thing, because the bikini top and low-rise bottoms run fairly small. One of our favorite attributes is that you can wear shorts and a top over them easily after swimming, like you would regular undergarments. Although the cost is on the higher end, it may be worth it to shop for a well-crafted swimsuit that will last you throughout the summer. It’s also extremely comfortable and so smooth that you feel like you’re not wearing a bathing suit at all. Our only note of improvement is that the size options are limiting and might not be the most supportive for those with larger busts.

This shapewear swimsuit could not be more of a home run. In fact, it may even be T+L editor Taylor Fox’s “favorite swimsuit of the year.” Aside from the fact that it’s available in four gorgeous colors— including leopard print—the suit is extremely comfortable for both walking around, swimming, and chilling. It features full mobility with a thick and supportive fabric that’s not at all see-through. 

As far as compression goes, Fox noted it contains the perfect amount to allow for a flattering silhouette, without being unbearably squeezed. During wet and dry use, the fabric didn’t stretch over time, and took around just 20 minutes to completely dry while hanging on the balcony. The bikini has a lightweight and breathable mesh that keeps you cool under the hot sun.

Our Testing Process

The Travel + Leisure team of expert pool loungers, ocean swimmers, and spa enthusiasts tested 60 bikinis to find the best ones. For most bikinis we tried, we had one tester try a size small or medium, and another try a large or bigger size. Each tester walked, sat, and moved about to understand the bathing suit's range of motion and comfort. They wore each bikini for at least two hours at the beach, lake, pool, or a similar setting to test performance (relaxing, swimming, or rigorous water activities), support, coverage, and water absorption. After use, the swimsuits were rinsed with cold water and hung to dry (away from the sunlight) to observe their drying abilities. The bikinis were then washed, according to the care instruction label, to see if the overall quality had changed. After testing wrapped up, we compared the results from the two testers to determine which suits performed best. 

Tips for Buying a Bikini

Adjustable features are key for comfort and fit

It’s rare to find a swimsuit that fits you perfectly. Purchasing a bikini that features adjustable shoulder straps is an essential part of achieving the most comfortable and supportive fit. Do your research on whether the suit offers removable padding and underwires. I prefer to take out the padding in bathing suits after the first wear because they tend to move around (for me, it’s a pain to continue adjusting them correctly after every wash). My second biggest tip would be to understand what you’re comfortable with in terms of coverage and what activities you’ll be using it for—for example, you may not want to shop for thong bottoms if you're planning on heading to a waterpark or a family pool day. 

Utilize sizing charts

If adjustable straps aren’t an option, take advantage of the retailer’s size chart that’s usually located above the sizing choices. It’s tough to determine the right size via the computer, so I will always do my due diligence in the customer review section and look for another shopper who’s a similar height and weight to me. If you are worried the swimsuit will be too big or too small, double-check the sizing chart (it will usually provide bust, waist, and hips sizes in inches to give a more exact size approximation). 

Consider the return policy

I’ve built a reputation for buying many different sizes and styles of clothing items, and then missing the return window or having to pay for additional shipping to return, resulting in me keeping clothing I didn’t necessarily want. The lesson here? Don’t be me: check the return policy guidelines before swiping the credit card. When the bathing suit does arrive in the mail, I’d advise not taking off the tags or sanitary stickers until you’re 100 percent confident that the bikini fits.
