Turns out, there are plenty of products that promise to keep your toes cozy, make your feet warmer, and treat your aching soles. Foot warmers run the gamut from high-tech options—including rechargeable socks and heated insoles—to simple choices like fuzzy slippers you can heat in the microwave.

Whether you’re an avid skier or hiker, or you’re like me and your toes tend to go numb in cold weather, foot warmers are a great accessory for winter travels. We’ve tested dozens of designs from toe inserts to rechargeable soles to find the best options for every traveler.

I married into a HotHands family, and every year, I look forward to receiving a package of hand warmers in my stocking. This year, I’ll be stuffing stockings and lining my shoes with the HotHands Insole Foot Warmers. We love these thin, adhesive foot warmers because they attach to the bottom of your socks and barely feel noticeable, whether you’re walking, hiking, jogging, or standing. After shaking to activate the warmers, they get very hot, very fast, and stay that way. These come in one size only, and while they didn’t completely cover the soles of our feet, it didn’t matter, the heat was well-distributed to all areas of our feet, including the toes. Better yet, the heat remained strong for seven hours, and after the promised nine hours, they still felt mildly warm.

While we were a little skeptical about the adhesive, the foot warmer kept its shape throughout the day, and we removed it without any difficulty or remaining sticky residue. Our only complaint about these foot warmers is that they are single-use, but at around $2 a pair, these insoles are an incredible value. Slim and lightweight, thesy deserve a spot in your carry-on bag for cold-weather destinations, ski trips, chilly hikes, and more.

Koozies are to chilled beverages, as Hot Sockees are to warm feet. Created with cyclists in mind, the adorably named Hot Sockee Neoprene Toe Warmers slip onto your toes over your socks and can be worn with sneakers, boots, and any other shoes—as long as you have a little toe-wiggle room.

We tested these in cold offices and movie theaters, and the Hot Sockee felt like wearing an extra sock, but more comfortable. I could see wearing these for long days out in the winter or carrying them in my purse for an unexpected chill. We noticed that it took 5 to 10 minutes for our toes to feel warmer, but after that, the heat remained consistent as long as we had them on.

We found the slim-profile insole foot warmers from The Heat Company incredibly easy to use. They heat up very fast without cords or batteries; you just open them and give them a shake. We tested these insoles on a three-hour hike in chilly weather (about 40 degrees), and they provided significant heat for six hours and moderate heat for another three hours—all evenly distributed across the sole of the foot. Because they are narrow and slim, these foot warmers don’t feel bulky, and they conform well to the shape of your foot. However, the lack of adhesive makes them prone to slippage, which can lead to inconsistent warmth.

These are high-tech foot warmers for heavy-duty use. While I tested these around my Brooklyn neighborhood, all I could think was: these would make an ideal gift for everyone I know who works outside. The rechargeable insoles take a small amount of effort to set up—including trimming them for size and pairing the remote—but the instructions are easy to follow and the setup is seamless.

I love that both insoles can be charged at once, thanks to a double-ended micro USB cord, and the remote adjusts the temperature while they are in my shoes. The battery and heat duration worked exactly as advertised: three hours on high (140 degrees Fahrenheit), five hours on medium (120 degrees Fahrenheit), and eight hours on low (100 degrees Fahrenheit). These insoles are bulkier and heavier than most, which makes them best suited to boots and slippers; in fact, they fit perfectly in my rain boots, which is how I plan to use them going forward.

Think of these as thermal underwear for your feet. Made from wool, the Yaktrax Thermal Cold Weather insoles are only slightly thicker than most insoles, which means they fit easily into many types of footwear—making them a great one-and-done insole to pack for a vacation. Out of the box, these insoles may need to be trimmed to size, though ours fit perfectly in our shoes.

We did notice the insole made our shoes feel a bit tighter on our hike, but we experienced no discomfort over the course of two hours. On a run, we noticed the impact made the foot warmer slip a little in the shoe, so we’d recommend these for hiking and low-impact activities. Our testing took place on a 50-degree day, so we can’t attest to their warmth in super-cold temperatures, though it should be noted that Yaktrax rates these for much colder weather.

Like other products we tested, YakTrax Geothermal Toe Warmers are activated by exposure to air and a little shaking and folding—though in our test, they took about 30 minutes to heat up. We love the secure adhesive, which attaches to your socks, making it easy to go from ski boot to slippers while keeping your toes cozy.

These warmers are so thin, we didn’t even feel them in our shoes until they started warming up. The evenly distributed warmth lasted well beyond our three-hour hike for an impressive 10 hours. Warmies Microwavable Slippers feel low-tech in the best way. To warm them up, you just pop them into the microwave (for less than a minute), then slip them onto your feet. The result is a cozy, fluffy, lavender-scented treat. We like that these are microwavable and don’t add more charging-cord clutter to our lives. These are not the most durable slippers we’ve ever tried, but they also aren’t the type of slippers you’d wear outside. Warmies make you want to put your feet up and wind down.

The downside to these foot warmers is that the heat radiates from the top and sides of the slipper, not the sole, and they don’t offer much arch support. That said, as a reminder to relax at the end of a crazy day, they earned a spot in our slipper rotation.

HotHands Toe Warmers: The HotHands Toe Warmers are affordable and lightweight, with heat that lasts for hours. That said, we would recommend the HotHands Insole Foot Warmers instead, since they offer a more distributed warmth.

Thermrup Electric Heated Insole Foot Warmers: Like the ActionHeat rechargeable insoles, these are easily trimmed to fit inside a variety of shoes, and they are priced much lower. However, these insoles don’t have a built-in battery; instead, you have to affix the battery via a Velcro band on your leg or shoe.

Our Testing Process

We tested 10 types of foot warmers, plus a variety of heated socks and heated slippers for over three weeks (and up to three years). We evaluated each product starting with the unboxing, noting how durable the products felt and how easy they were to set up. We observed how long each product took to heat up, whether the warmth was consistent over time, and if the promises on the packaging about temperature and duration matched reality.

We wore the foot warmers several times, evaluating their efficacy and comfort in different environments, including outdoors and indoors, and using while standing, hiking, and walking. We noted whether they felt bulky or interfered with our normal motion. Finally, we considered the price and portability of each product to determine whether they were travel-friendly and offered value. We will continue using these products to gain more insights, particularly regarding wear and tear.

Tips For Buying Foot Warmers

Know your warmth needs

Is your goal warmer feet at home, outdoors, or both? While some of these products can be used both indoors and outdoors, that isn’t the case with all foot warmers. For instance, products that need to be heated in the microwave are best used at home. For outdoor use, consider the low temperatures of your destination. For folks who will be moving frequently between cold outdoors and warmer indoors, an adjustable-heat foot warmer may be most appropriate.
